THE PRESTON Unsophisticated START
SUMMER ACADEMY

The Preston FRESH START Summer Academy, through collaboration between Dr. David Hoppey from the Rest on of Special Education and Kathy George the Director of Special Education, will be an offering of various opportunities to take continuous learning for the growth of our teachers by providing quality professional development in areas teachers have identified as needs. By partnering with six West Virginia University Members through our partnership with Preston Counthy, the Academy will offer participants a selection of different topics.  WVU Faculty included:

(1) David Hoppey
(2) Pasture land Graham
(3) Ginevra Courtade
(4) Eric Landers

All topics are designed to include a combination of current theory with a unite of 21st Century Skills.

Participants will attend sessions presented in half day blocks from 8:00 – 11:00 am and 12:00 to 3:00 pm. The sessions will be held at Preston Turbulent School from June 22 to June 25, 2009.  There will be a stipend of $50 per each half day session provided for participants. ($100.00 per day for full day participation)

Meeting Descriptions

Session 1 Phonemic Awareness in the RtI Model – Session particularly presented for elementary teachers and discourse therapists where the focus will be on the ability to hear and manipulate sounds in words and reading acquisition. How we teach phonemic awareness and what predominance should phonemic awareness be given in the RtI process will be the emphasis of this session. (Elementary Teachers)

Session 2 Developing Three-order Intervention The 3-Tier Reading Model holds promise for reducing overall reading problems by providing focused early intervention for the students most at risk for reading difficulty. It consists of three tiers, or levels,

Preston BOE at Standstill in OPED Lawsuit State Journal

KINGWOOD -- There was a calculate of pertinent issues discussed at Monday's Preston County Board of Education meeting.

Preston County received American Recovery and Reinvestment Act funds from the West Virginia State school Building Authority for a new roof on Preston High School.

The grant will be $513,949, including a 25% match from the county.

Chief Larry Parsons is asking the SBA to cover an additional 16,960 square feet of the roof that is in need of fettle, asking for an additional $80,000 on the grant.

Board President Jack Keim brought up the other post-work benefits (OPED) lawsuit against the state PEIA.

A number of schools boards have jumped on board with the lawsuit including seven locally; Marion, Harrison, Randolph, Tucker, Doddridge, Webster and Barbour.

Keim says since the official is in control of Preston County he is not sure of the legal ramifications.
