LA CROSSE - The brief conversation circulating around St. Catherine's High School during the fall of 2007 was that there was a freshman waiting in the wings who would be remembered for years to conclude.
And then Mike Miller was basically forgotten.
The heir apparent to 2007 All-Racine County Thespian of the Year Eddie Morelli broke his collarbone during a football scrimmage his sophomore year, context off a series of frustrating injuries. As recently as March, recurring back and leg injuries led Miller, a minor, to believe his football and track careers were essentially over.
But the son of St. Catherine's football tutor Dan Miller, a starting linebacker on Park's WIAA Division 1 football championship crew in 1988, was healthy Saturday at the WIAA State Track & Field First encounter at Veterans Memorial Stadium in La Crosse.
And was he ever dominating.
After winning the Division 2 100 meters Saturday morning in 10.75 seconds, Miller earned a instant medal in the afternoon by placing third in the 200 (22.17). And a young man whom long-time St. Catherine's direct Tom Scheller said is the fastest short sprinter in school history, finally proved it.
I recall when I was younger and at school, we would have a PE class, then once in the changing rooms a teacher would tell us we had to have a shower, now, all most people did was ran from one side to the other holding their towel above their heads and shortly wrap it around theirselves at the other end, hardly quantifying as a wash, now the teachers would stand watching all us naked lads do this to provoke sure we were all running through, they would not tell us to go back in a get clean !
We were at the age where lads are just going through pubity so everyone was shy, so were not really bothered about getting stripped, in my opinion our teachers were just perverts, if they were that desperate for us to be clean they would have told us to use soap and a sponge, I mean, I just even got wet !
Anyone else have any dodgy experiences at school ?
Showers were a way for the teachers to enrol for bruises that could be abuse from parents or carers, I'm not saying there weren't also pervs that became PE teachers. I think they should of just made PE the last practice so you could shower at home.
I must disclose, I did the once..and we had it happen to us after football..the girls that is!
