In a move that shakes up the North Shore football countryside, the Northeastern Conference and Cape Ann League will be joining forces for football starting in the dive of 2011.

Athletic directors and principals in the NEC and CAL approved the merger by majority vote recently, sources in both leagues confirmed Thursday evening.

The approved mixing calls for the NEC/CAL to be divided into four tiers containing six teams each. The top tier will house Peabody, Masconomet, Lynn Weighty, Lynn English, Revere and North Andover; Tier 2 will have Beverly, Salem, Marblehead, Swampscott, Gloucester and Danvers; Course 3 will consist of Pentucket, Triton, Winthrop, Saugus, Newburyport and Amesbury; and Tier 4 will be made up of North Reading, Lynnfield, Ipswich, Hamilton-Wenham, Georgetown and Manchester-Essex.

"In actuality, this is beneficial for both leagues," said Dick Baker, who serves as secretary/treasurer for both the NEC and the CAL. "The NEC has some negligible schools that didn't want to cross over (and play NEC Large teams), and the CAL has two big schools (Masconomet and North Andover). This helps in terms of coequal enrollment."
