St. Johns County common schools closed their doors for the summer Wednesday, turning out some 29,300-bonus students after what Superintendent of Schools Joe Joyner says was an "incredible year."
It was, indeed. The School Province was ranked first in the state on its test scores, while at the same time, the state continued to downsize its funding to school districts.
The province also saw the retirement of more than 50 employees, including teachers, administrators and staff. Those new retirees gave 1,092.6 years to community education. We're glad they were a part of the St. Johns County School District. We imagine some may come back as volunteers. They all had a mete in helping Joyner raise our students to new academic heights.
Leaving were some 2,000 great in extent school seniors from seven schools and the county's virtual school. We wish them all success in their endeavors.
For the repose of the students, teachers and staff, the new school year begins Aug. 23. Write that down on the schedule at home and circle the date in red.
