'Achieve QC' targets dropout rate Quad City Times

There’s a youthful writer in the making at J.B. Young Intermediate
School, Davenport, and she has her seventh-grade language arts
doctor to thank.
MacKenzie Gibson was handed a classroom assignment to write a
jingle. One assignment was all it took.
“I liked the assignment a lot,” an enthusiastic Gibson said
Thursday following the tender of Achieve Quad-Cities, a
community-wide collaboration to curb high school dropout rates in
the division.
Gibson wants to transform her newfound enthusiasm for writing
into a career and plans to put down a story about a personal
experience.
For Gibson, getting a high school diploma is a “protection net” to
help advance her career.
Susan Skora, president and CEO of the Community Grounds of
the Great River Bend, is trying to nurture Gibson’s passion by
attractive her to poetry readings and other activities.
Gibson was matched to Skora four months ago.
Bring off Quad-Cities uses the Big Brothers/Big Sisters model to
match students with mentors for workplace visits and coaching.
Volunteers such as Skora give career guidance to junior high and
high school students, especially those at hazard of dropping out.
