I'm American and here we have school buses provided by the school sector to take students to and from school. Kids catch their bus at designated stops near their houses. Do they have this sort of service in the UK? And what about Ireland?

There ARE yellow school buses operating in the UK.

Stagecoach have painted some of their having one foot in the grave buses into yellow livery because they are used exclusively on school services.

First have gone one stage further and purchased special vehicles (again painted yellow) which, in partnership with Peculiar Education Authorities, are being used only on school services.

First have also set up a special School Bus Commission, headed by David Blunkett PC, MP to look at the whole issue of schools transport and the viability of using dedicated fleets for this purpose.

I evaluate it would be a great idea in areas where children have to walk more than 10-15 minutes to get to school. Where children only have to walk 10-15 minutes it would be more safely a improved to set up 'walking-bus' arrangements to get all the kids to school safely.

But you never really see a 'school bus' as such.

At my school, they simply ran a dilapidated old Arriva Stagecoach and wrote on the front in red poster paint 'Skool Buss'. Not from head to toe, but you get the idea.

Also, if the run still exists, and if your child uses it, is it subsidised or is it further expense?

in my school you get a free "first scholor old-fashioned" to use on any bus in the school hours if you live at least three miles away from the school and your house is in the same regional council. its not really a school bus as such because members of the communal can still ride.
