High school athletics look for fundraising opportunities in face ... San Jose Mercury News

Extended gone are the days when bake sales and car washes would suffice. For today's high school sports teams to set-back on the field, they need to think outside the box of candy bars when it comes to fundraising.

With local school districts brutally cutting funding for sports this year, athletics programs are working harder than ever to make up for lost dollars.

Pajaro Valley Unified School Partition has eliminated all funding for sports except for the athletics directors' salaries at the district's three high schools. Santa Cruz Conurbation Schools reduced its contribution for athletics from 40 percent of the coaching stipends to 20 percent.

However, Tim McGuire, who was ranking at Harbor High the last two years before retiring this summer to take a roll assisting SCCS athletic directors with the fiscal crisis, said the district money won't be used for sports. Principals at the district's three high schools have elected to use that ready money for classroom programs, which have also been hit hard by the state's budget deficit.

What is the best way to fundraise for a school sports tour?

Any hints or tips? We are looking to exhilarate a substantial amount of money but in a relatively short space of time.
