(MYFOX Chauvinistic) - As the beginning of the school year fast approaches, many parents find themselves scrambling to fill school supply lists, which seem to be getting bigger and more valuable each year.

Families with children in kindergarten through 12th grade can expect to spend $548.72 on school merchandise this year, according to the Jingoistic Retail Federation's 2009 Back to School Consumer Intentions and Actions Survey . That's actually down about 8 percent from last year's normally of $597.74.

The lower spending is due in part to the struggling economy. According to the survey, the majority of Americans have made some changes to back-to-school plans this year, and almost half of those surveyed said they would lay out less on school supplies than last year.

"The economy has clearly changed the spending habits of American families, which will likely create a particular back-to-school season for retailers," said Tracy Mullin, President and CEO of NRF. "As people focus primarily on price, resolute promotions and deep discounts will ultimately win over back-to-school shoppers this year."

Which comapanies would donate school supplies?

I am doing a put forth in which I collect school supplies for children in Africa.
Do you know any of (probably worldwide) companies that would donate pencils, pens, etc.?

You can try companies like Walmart, Staples, Commission Max, and Target...but there will be a simple grant process and it will depend on what their grant giving initiative is for that year. There is usually a severe application process, and then a waiting period. You can find the application right on their websites.

You may actually have more success calling village small businesses and asking for small donations from many different places. Or consider doing a penny dig and then using the money to purchase supplies.

The economy is tough right now, but there are still those willing to give. It is just going to depend on how pertinacious you can be.

Most of the worst companies are already donating locally. With economics so bad it will be difficult to find any willing to give abroad.

walmart is the most superbly. usually kids shop there so the notbooks have characters of shows or whatever. school supplies are best here because there quality and they have to be cheaper than the other stores , becaseu i wish, IT IS WALMART! get them before school starts and theyll be cheaper.
