There’s a unsophisticated writer in the making at J.B. Young Intermediate School, Davenport, and she has her seventh-grade vernacular arts teacher to thank.
MacKenzie Gibson was handed a classroom commission to write a poem. One assignment was all it took.
“I liked the assignment a lot,” an energetic Gibson said Thursday following the launch of Achieve Quad-Cities, a community-broad collaboration to curb high school dropout rates in the region.
Gibson wants to change her newfound enthusiasm for writing into a career and plans to write a story about a individual experience.
For Gibson, getting a high school diploma is a “safe keeping net” to help advance her career.
Susan Skora, president and CEO of the Community Underlying of the Great River Bend, is trying to nurture Gibson’s passion by enchanting her to poetry readings and other activities.
Gibson was matched to Skora four months ago.
Bring off Quad-Cities uses the Big Brothers/Big Sisters model to match students with mentors for workplace visits and coaching. Volunteers such as Skora make career guidance to junior high and high school students, singularly those at risk of dropping out.
