St Marks School through the non-aligned just before Christmas time...
According to James McGinty of the Any Agency Training Council, circa 1999, “suicide is a far more common form of violence involving students than school homicide. In some cases, perpetrators of school shootings felt (hoped?) their actions would direction to their being killed by police, which also could be considered a form of suicide—“
What exactly are the statistics relative to suicides and suicidal ideation, I have infinitesimal clue. Fact is, though, for over 8 years I worked part-time for Lehigh County (Pa) Crisis Intervention, and by that benchmark I can tell you ideation is a huge problem.
In too many cases, if the student is thinking it, soon he or she will be doing it!
It is natural, then, for me to introduce that, if and when schools come up with appropriate in and out-service training programs for their teachers that they consider developing a plan that specifies how to pinpoint students at risk, how to handle threats (of suicide), and what actions to take in the case of suicidal threats, plus, what actions to take in the as it of a suicide.
Schools must ensure that students have, and are aware of, simple and easy ways to get help, such as access to suicide hotlines, counselors, et al.
McGinty goes on to call to mind that students, parents, guardians, teachers, and other school personnel be educated on how to identify and get help for troubled students before they actuate their suicidal ideation.
Mayhap another emergence schools might address is how to encourage teachers, students, parents/guardians to report their fears and concerns about their children and the kids of others. My scrutinization relative to Workplace Violence would indicate that over 85% of violence on or near the job site could have been prevented, if reported.

School safety conference in Commerce City focuses on bullying Denver Post
03.06.10
Business CITY — Colorado educational changes include new standards, assessments and ways to judge teachers — but none of that matters if students feel unsafe.
"Students can't learn if they don't deem safe," said Assistant Deputy Education Secretary Kevin Jennings in the keynote song at the School Safety and Violence Prevention Conference taking place this week at Adams See High School. Jennings heads the federal Office of Safe and Drug-Subject to Schools and is on a mission to eliminate bullying, which, he says, studies show touches about one in three students.
"The impression that we have to accept this as a rite of passage is simply wrong," he said, adding that the omnipresence of bullying is a much bigger problem than any other type of school violence.
"What most kids worry about is not the horrific events that enact the evening news," he said. "It is the daily incivil behavior, bullying and public exclusion."
Students skip class, stay home from school or avoid joining activities because of bullying, he said. This can do the groundwork to chronic educational and emotional problems that can affect people throughout their lives.
School Violence!!?

I received this missive from my son's school. And I'm conflicted, should I keep my son home 5/13?
"Not long ago, a drawing depicting a threat to our high school (that was to take place on 5/13/08) was found in one of the stairwells in our construction. from our investigation, which was done in conjunction with the Suffolk county police department, we were able to identify the student who had drawn the picture. this particular has been disciplined by our administration to the greatest extent possible. while we feel confident that this matter has been resolved, as a precaution, we will be charming additional security measures on the following days."
(sigh) Plato, it's just so scary. I craving they put this kid through the ringer
No a day off shouldn't be a problem. but I also don't want to put the fear in him.
I think they should have had a meeting and we should have been able to get more information on the the whole situation!!
Sounds like a gyp Snizz and they have disciplined the student-the student must be either an idiot or a practical joker
Depends what the drawing is about of course-see what the other parents are doing !
