College conference alignment: Think blitz San Diego Union Tribune

College seminar alignment: Think blitz Big shuffle looms, thanks to TV cash

Retain in high school how everybody — or not — wanted to be part of the cool kids group?

Some past due-bloomers were recruited to join. Others weren’t cool enough, got jealous or didn’t take care of.

It’s the same dynamic now ready to transform college football in a big way.

Is Texas Tech pretty enough to join UCLA and USC in the entrancing Pac-10 Conference?

Should San Diego State vote to invite Boise Regal to its increasingly cool clique?

It’s a popularity contest driven by television gate. And it forever could change rivalries and Saturday afternoons in the fall.

In a few years, it could be Texas A&M vs. Cal for the Pac-16 Convention title. It depends how the dominoes fall, starting as early as this week.

“It’s sports economics meets lilting chairs,” said David Carter, executive director of the Sports Partnership Institute at USC. “You do not want to be that school that is the last one left standing when the bellwether teams in your meeting have decided to make a move. Increasingly, you have to move up, move down or move out. The big brands are coveted, and the lesser-known brands may find themselves having to blend or coexist in less powerful conferences.”
