Fort Worth school district trustees can't afford to give across ... Fort Worth Star Telegram
If legislators imagined that they made everything wagerer for the state’s financially ailing school districts by tweaking funding allotments, well, the fever and body aches have moderated, but only pro tem.
Even with an increase in state money, the Fort Worth school district is having to slash and scrimp and shift to camouflage a $43 million shortfall — and school board members face having to make even harder choices next year.
Region officials project that board members can make ends meet for 2009-10 only if they don’t raise salaries beyond what the Legislature required.
Trustees don’t like to apprise employees "no." It makes them unpopular, and they worry about sending dedicated staff the wrong message.
But this is a year that demands putting role before popularity.
It will take creativity to balance the budget.
Making changes that will result in almost $15.5 million in savings. In June, the school live approved recommendations that included eliminating 40 campus monitors ($800,000), ending bus evacuation training ($196,000) and stern money for the Dunbar Community School ($135,700).
