School bus operators want some norms dropped Times of India
09.06.10
PUNE: School transporters have sought
a relook at some of the guidelines strained up by the state government to make
travel safe for students. Some of these norms will compromise protection rather than
enhance it, they said.
The state government is in the process of
formulating a policy for school buses necessitated after the Navi Mumbai
catastrophe last August in which three students lost their lives and more than 15
were injured when the bus they were travelling in caught fire.
Schools in Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad have around 875 buses, while an
additional 167 are hired by the institutions. Sneaking operators who own around
500 buses and around 6,000 autorickshaws also ferry students to a number of schools.
"We are cautious when we transport students to and from school. We
are following most of the guidelines given by the ceremonial transport department,
but some norms are not practical. The government should do a rethink," said
