Parents say bus cuts will put pupils at risk WalesOnline

PARENTS will mount a protest today as anger mounts over cost-cutting plans to scrap home-to-school transport for hundreds of pupils.

Merthyr Tydfil meeting says it needs to save money and those primary pupils living within 1.5 miles of their school and senior school pupils within two miles will now have to find their own way as it has no bond to provide transport for them.

Fourteen schools will be affected by the recession-fuelled changes in September – and parents are in fracas. Banner-waving families from Edwardsville Primary, Treharris, will protest outside the civic centre, vestibule councillors attending council and present a 1,000-strong petition to try to force a U-turn.

Mother-of-two Leanne Harvard, one of the demurral organisers, said: “We’ve had letters to say they’re stopping buses because costs have to be cut – and it hasn’t even gone to ministry yet.”

Around 140 children would be affected at 340-pupil Edwardsville Primary. There are concerns children and parents now mask a 20-minute walk along a busy stretch of road.
